Break Away

Jorie West © 2009

She looked into the mirror, touched the colors on her face

And reached down for the make-up that would cover every trace

Of the bruise upon her cheekbone from his heavy hand, last night

She wondered what she’d done and if she’d ever, ever, get it right.

She closed her eyes, remembering the words her father said

So many years ago, when he’d wished that she were dead

and she cried, cried ….she cried.

Sometimes he’d ignore her, but mostly he was cruel

He beat her with a belt, he said, because she broke the rules

The first chance that she got she packed her bags and ran away

And moved in with a stranger, just to have a place to stay

But he used her and abused her like her father had for years

And today it’s hard to see… through the swelling and the tears

When she cries, cries, she cries.

(Chorus)

Break away!  Go! Break away!

From the heavy hand of an angry man

That’ll never treat you like a lady

He’ll break your heart, tear you apart

and leave you cryin’ like a baby

if you stay…..hey hey break away

Lyin’ on the counter, she saw the butcher knife

and picked it up determined to end this hopeless life

but a baby’s cry pierced through her thoughts, the knife fell on the floor

she realized that her baby girl deserved to have much more

She grew up believing that her mama didn’t care

She couldn’t do that to her child, she could never leave her there

when she cried, cried, she cried.

Yahweh!   Yaaaaaaaaaa Yahweh!

Hey ya hey heya hey heya Yihowa

Tsisa gesvi Unelanvhi!

Hey ya hey heya hey heya Yihowa

Tsisa gesvi Unelanvhi!

Hey ya hey heya hey heya Yihowa

Tsisa gesvi Unelanvhi!

The sound of her tormented tears Just breaks my heart,

the sound of her pleasure, fears, tears my soul apart

Seeing that scared look upon her face always makes me cry

Knowing how she longs for a comforting embrace that inside she yearns to die

Seeing the bruises, covering from head to toe breaks my heart even more

Knowing she's too afraid to go. Too frightened to walk out the door

Hearing her excuses, saying he'll change believing, one day,the abuse will end

Telling herself,it's her, not him who's deranged convincing herself she doesn't need a friend

Telling herself time and time again, he's all she needs to live saying she loves him, and change him, she can that she'll give him all she can give that is if she didn't always make him so mad he wouldn't have to hit her anymore It just makes me so sad Knowing, he'll eventually kill her for sure Sadly, I look at her, as she continues to cry and my heart just aches And knowing that I can no longer deny What it is that really makes my heart break Is that the girl I'm looking at, but can't really see through my tears, in the mirror, is me

A battered woman that's what I am,
Battered body, battered mind,
Mind screwed up can't sleep,
Mind screwed up can't eat,
Being hit from top to toe,
Trying not to let it show,
Walking slow in agony clutching
At straws to keep your sanity,
Taking deep breathes to ease the pain,
The pain that shows upon your face,
But you're trying not to feel disgraced,
People looking, people who know,
That in your mind you're about to blow,
Your mind can't take any more,
You know you've got to get up and go,
Go where?
Does anyone care?

THE BEST IS NEVER OVER

The best is never over,

The best has never gone,

There's always something lovely

To keep you struggling on;

There's always compendation,

For every cross you bear,

A secret consolation,

Hidden well somewhere.

Ends are new beginnings,

As one day you will see;

The best is never over,

The best is yet to be!

I THOUGHT I KNEW

Thinking back on memories of time

Looking out at the moon

I thought I knew

Thought I knew what love was

Remembering the pain and fear it caused me

Holding on to the dreams and hope of the night

In darkness, I always found my light

The moon shining on my face

Tears , prayers , and hope trying to erase

Love is a fight some say

But tell that to a child or a woman who's been hurt or living in Pain

Our prayers lifted each night

Guided by the wolf our escape in sight

We thought we knew

Our bruises and pain are not forever

Within Eagles' wings we are held together

We are still here

We have never ending spirit in our heart

Our relations stand by our side

To fight so we will no longer have to hide

Little child please hold on

Young women keep and have faith

Someday our tears will be wiped dry

When that time comes it'll be time to fly

Fly in the wind, and soar with the Hawk

Today you hold your head up and walk on free

Knowing now you can be
