Kelly Montijo (pronounced
Mont –ee –ho) Fink, singer /“song
catcher”
Kelly (Mexican, Apache, & Spanish) was
born in California now but now resides in the
Midwest. She has been singing for as long as
she can remember & has performed everything from musical
theater, Italian opera, and madrigal arrangements, to mariachi music
& Native drum songs.
Kelly considers herself a “song
catcher” rather than a song writer. She rarely sits down to
write a song, but rather observes , hears, and sees truth & then
allows the words and melodies flow to from there.
For several years, Kelly spent hours every
week singing her prayers for the tribes of North America. It was out of this time that the
songs of her debut CD (“Heartbeat of the Creator”) were
born. A famous Guatemalan musician, Ricardo Arjona, once said,
“Songs are born in absolute solitude, but they find
accomplices”. Indeed this was the case, as Kelly was honored
with a 2008 Native American Music nomination in the gospel /
inspirational category.
Kelly is currently working on
her second CD to be titled “Songs of War and Victory – overcoming
the battles we face” where she tackles such themes as identity,
complacency, restoration, healing, & overcoming adverse
circumstance.&nbs p; She is also collaborating with Jan Michael
Looking Wolf on an upcoming project.
Kelly is a part time Spanish professor at
Cornell College &
Kirkwood
Community
College. She is married and has
two children.
